Ok let me preface this post by saying that most of what I have to say today will probably be seen as controversial, but you know what that’s ok. I am going to stand behind the fact that sometimes it is ok to quit! There I said it. I am a firm believer that in life sometimes the best thing you can do is to quit and leave a situation. So I wanted to take some time today, and briefly talk about why it is ok to quit.
Let me start by saying that sometimes it is ok to quit because the simple fact is that you only have one life, and doing things that make you unhappy or are unhealthy is not how you should be living that life. Take stock of what you are letting into your life because it may be ok to quit some of them.
Things Aren’t Always Right
The second reason I think it is ok to quit things sometimes is because some things genuinely aren’t always right for you, and that completely normal. Not everything is always right for us, and because of that sometimes it is ok to leave those things or remove them from our lives.
Listen To Your Gut
This in my opinion is one of the most important reasons it is ok to quit, and that is that you have to listen to your gut. You have to trust yourself, and what you know is or isn’t right for you. And as unfortunate as it may be sometimes that means quitting something.
Quitting Is Not Failure
This is by far the most important reason that it’s ok to quit sometimes, and that is that quitting is not always failure. I am so tired of people equating the idea of quitting something with failure, when in fact the two have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Sometimes something genuinely isn’t right for you to be involved in, and it’s ok to quit that thing, but that doesn’t mean you failed at it.
I will be totally honest I have always had a difficult time quitting things. Call it the recovering perfectionist in me, but it’s true. But one thing I have learned over the past few years and definitely through my most recent “quittings” is that sometimes quitting something is actually what is best for you. You have this one life to live, and it shouldn’t be spent doing things that don’t serve you because some things just aren’t right for you to be doing. Additionally you have to trust your instincts and listen to your gut because more likely than not you know what you should do in a situation, if you actually take the time out to listen to yourself. Lastly I cannot stress enough that you should not consider quitting as a sign of failure, rather I encourage you to consider it as a necessary step towards where you want to end up.
