Success. What does success even mean, I mean really, it is such an ambiguous term in and of itself. Oxford Dictionaries defines success as “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose”. But what the heck does that even mean. I don’t know about you, but it feels like success has become such a dirty word lately because so much of it’s definition is rooted in societal expectations and norms, and who the heck was given the authority to determine what is success for one person over another.
I don’t know about you, but I used to write on my bucket list that I wanted to be successful, but I honestly had no idea what the hell that even meant. I didn’t know what success meant because I was so busy focusing on what everyone else determined as a successful life that I didn’t take the time to decide what success meant on my own terms. I realized that I came to resent the word success because to me it became a representation of what society expected of me, and if you know anything about me you know that I am not a big fan of doing what society thinks I should do. Call me a rule breaker, but I believe you should live your life for you, and no one else.
I don’t mean to rag on success in fact I think it is something we should all shoot for, but on our own terms. I don’t think it makes sense to shoot for a desired outcome that is entirely based on arbitrary rules and regulations put in place by society. Instead I encourage you to define success for yourself. What does it mean to you? How would you define success? What does it actually look like to you? Think about what your definition of success is, and shoot for that. Be specific, write it out, plan it out, and then go for it. Because here’s the thing going for “success” when you have no idea what that even means to you is just setting yourself up for failure, because let’s fact it you would have no idea what direction you were even going. So start defining these terms on your own, use them to fuel you, and push you forward, as opposed to some big scary societal pressure.
