If you have been around the blog/website for a while now then you are probably no stranger to the fact that I have not always been on the personal development train, in fact I thought most personal development and self growth was crap. I will be completely honest I just didn’t believe in it, but boy has that changed because I am a firm believer in it now more than ever. One of the big things I have discovered in my own personal development journey is that overcoming your own limiting beliefs is one of the hardest thing someone can ever do. Now you may be wondering what limiting beliefs are. Simply put limiting beliefs are the thought patterns that we have that aren’t serving us in any good way, and oh my gosh did I have some (yes I still do, but that is a constant work in progress). So in honor of all of us constantly working to better ourselves I wanted to take today to share five of my favorite simple ways to overcome your own limiting beliefs.
Acting As If
Acting as if you already have what you want or already are who you want to be is one key way to help overcome limiting beliefs because it allows you to rethink your bad habits and though patterns. Simply acting on the things you want can be super powerful because our thoughts are where our power comes from. For example let’s say you want to become the CEO of a large company, why not already act like you are; dress, act, talk, think, etc. like a CEO. By doing that you are drawing that energy towards yourself.
Why Before How
This is probably one of my favorite ways to overcome your limiting beliefs and shift our thought patterns, and that is to know your why before your how. Now you may be thinking what does that even mean, but trust me when I say it will change your life. Knowing your why before you know your how means that you are focusing on the why of the things you want to accomplish before you think about how you will accomplish them. This technique gives you perspective and priorities, so you know which thoughts to actually listen to, which things to focus on, and which things to ignore or place on the back burner.
Scarcity vs. Abundance
Another key way to shift and overcome our limiting beliefs is to make sure that we are approaching our lives and mindset from the place of abundance versus a place of scarcity. This technique refers to operating your life from a place of prosperity as opposed to a place of lack. Because here’s the thing when you run your life from a place of oh there isn’t enough out there for me you put yourself in a horrible headspace. You start to believe that things aren’t possible because there isn’t enough success, money, etc. for you. In contrast when you approach your life from the place of abundance you believe that you can do the things you want to accomplish, and you slowly start to shift and overcome those limiting beliefs.
Fixed vs. Growth
Not unlike living from a place of abundance versus scarcity, living from a place of growth as opposed to a fixed mindset is absolutely crucial for overcoming limiting beliefs. When you are fixed or stagnant in your life you don’t believe that things can change, grow, or become better, so in relation to your thoughts nothing will change. In contrast living from a growth stance means that you are constantly changing, and that change allows you to believe that things will get better, to believe that you can overcome those limiting beliefs, and eventually you will.
Law of Attraction
Now I am not going to get too woo woo on you, but I do want to take a minute and address using the Law of Attraction as a technique to overcome limiting beliefs. The basic premise of the Law of Attraction is that like attracts like, so what you put out into the world is what you get back. The reason this is such a good technique to overcome and shift your limiting beliefs is because it involves you consciously taking action and acting a particular way. For example let’s say that you want to overcome the limiting belief that you can’t be in a healthy relationship start focusing on ensuring that all of your relationships are balanced and healthy, and watch as more and more healthy relationships come into your life. Slowly but surely you mindset and limiting beliefs on your ability to have a healthy relationship will shift.
Like I said before, overcoming your own limiting beliefs and negative thought patterns can and probably will be one of the hardest things you will ever do in your personal development journey, but it will also be one of the most rewarding because you will grow as a person. So if you are struggling to overcome your own limiting beliefs I encourage you to test out these techniques of acting as if, knowing your why before your how, living from a place of abundance as opposed to scarcity, living from a place of growth as opposed to fixed or stagnation, and using the law of attraction; to see if they can help you become the best version of yourself.
