If you have been around the blog for a while then you know that I am a huge fan of mindful living, and easy ways to incorporate that into your life. In honor of that I wanted to share with you the ways I have incorporated that mindful living into my bedroom because after all that is the place where in my opinion we should be the most mindful and relaxed. Now you may be thinking Caitlin why do we care what you have in your bedroom that is weird, but just hear me out because I can guarantee that some of these things will do wonders in your life too. For me personally there are 5 things that I do or have in my bedroom that help me live more mindfully, more relaxed, and more comfortable in my space, and they are textures, mood lighting, a salt lamp, essential oils and a diffuser, and removable technology.
I am a HUGE texture person! I will be totally honest about that. I love a comfy blanket and a cozy room. So one thing I have found that I need to truly make the most of my bedroom, and to truly enjoy living in it is to fill the room with textures that make me feel good, whether that is a soft fuzzy blanket or a furry rug, I am all about it.
Another huge thing I have done to really enjoy my space, and to live in it more mindfully is to be strategic about my lighting choices. If you walk in my room you may not see my ceiling light on, instead you may see a string of twinkle lights, or a lamp, or just my salt lamp on. The point being I have found that lighting can be a super intentional thing, and can really affect our mood, so try experimenting with different lighting sources, and see how they make you and your room feel.
Now if you are new around here you may not know that I used to think salt lamps and the hype around them was a bunch of nonsense, but y’all I cannot even begin to tell you how wrong I was. Since getting my salt lamp almost 2 years ago I have seen a drastic difference when I use it regularly. I swear to you it does something to the air! I know that the whole premise is that it helps remove toxins from the air with negative ions and has a whole bunch of science (which I won’t go into here) behind it, but I still didn’t believe it. I have found that it actually does make the air feel clearer and more pure in a sense, which in turn has made me more mindful with my breathing. I notice my breathing more, I notice the cleanliness of the air, and the quality of the air I am breathing in.
Oil Diffuser/Essential Oils
Oh sweet goodness I am going to have to bite my tongue on this one. Not unlike the salt lamp I thought essential oils and the hype around them were crap. I will be honest I am a recovering skeptic, but boy was I wrong. I bought myself a small diffuser and one oil last year, and now have joined the bandwagon full force. I even asked for oils for Christmas if you can believe it haha. I now swear by the benefits of using oils through your home, and especially in your bedroom or living space. I don’t know what it is but there is something about putting a lovely scent throughout your room that makes you stop in your tracks and be more mindful of what is around you, so now I have become a true convert.
This one may be the most mindful thing I do in my room, and that is the absence of technology. All of the technology in my bedroom is completely removable. By that I mean the only tech I have in my room are my phone and my laptop, both of which I can take out of the room or turn off. I don’t have a tv, a land line, or even a clock in my room. I have been very intentional about this because I have found that the more present I am in my own living space the more it benefits me, whether thats in my sleep or waking hours.
So if you are struggling to practice mindfulness or to live a more intentional life I highly encourage you to start in your bedroom because that is the place we spend our most intimate and purposeful moments. Try out some of these techniques and implement them into you life and bedroom, and watch as you start to live a more mindful and relaxed life.
