Hello my darlings! I don’t know about you but I love this time of the year. I love all of the cold weather, coziness, time spent with loved ones, and being cuddled up next to a warm fireplace. In the spirit of this I wanted to introduce you to an idea known as “hygge”. You may or may not have heard of it considering it has been a huge craze this past year. Hygge is a Danish practice that doesn’t really translate to English, but generally relates to that those cozy, happy, warm feelings you get from doing things you enjoy like drinking a warm cup of tea or sitting around a fire outside with friends. It is more of a feeling you get from creating a warm, happy and positive way to live with the people you enjoy sharing that with. This is something that I have been trying to do even more lately, this kind of slow intentional living. As I get older I realize more and more that those are the kinds of things I want out of life; great memories, good food, joy, and time with the people I love. That may sound kind of cheesy, but oh well. So in the spirit of this I wanted to give y’all some tips and tricks on how to hygge up your home (haha I love alliteration) and life. Each of these is something super easy to implement into your everyday life, and who knows maybe it will bring you a little more happiness and comfort.
- Cozy textures
Toss some fluffy blankets and a few cozy pillows on the couch, and you will instantly be adding to the overall comfort of your home.
- Ambience and soft or mood lighting
Lighting is a huge aspect of hygge because it allows you to create softness to your surroundings, which can be soothing and relaxing. Light some candles… better yet light all the candles… the more the merrier. Hygge is all about the candles and candlelight. Or you could try putting up some Christmas of twinkle lights around your room to add a glow.
- Quality time with people you care about
One of the most important parts of practicing a lifestyle with hygge at the center is to make sure that you are spending quality time with the people that you care about. It can be something as simple as having people over for dinner, or meeting up with friends for a quick chat and coffee. As long as you are actively enjoying the time that you are spending with other people you are doing it right.
- Tea and warm drinks
Boil yourself a kettle of water, pop your favorite tea into a cup, and sit back and enjoy the warmth and soothing feeling as it washes over you.
Who doesn’t love a good fireplace? I know that I love cozying up on the couch next to the fire and spending time just relaxing and living in the moment.
- Importance of happiness and relaxation
Hygge really stresses the importance of happiness and relaxation in life, and doing the things that can allow you to lead a life with those themes as central elements.
- Share with those around you
They say sharing is caring, well apparently the Danish agree with that because living a life by the principles of hygge involves sharing with those around you. By giving to others you are also giving back to yourself, leading you to a more fulfilled life.
- Practice being grateful
Practice being grateful, and you will begin to feel more fortunate and more connected to what you do have in your life.
- Practice being present
This one is huge! Practice being present and intentional in your life. You would be surprised how much better you feel about your life and even your day when you slow down and take a moment to look around and take it all in.
- Comfy clothes
Just like having cozy textures around your house, why not have our clothes be cozy and comfortable too. Throw on your favorite comfy and cozy sweater and cuddle yourself up with a cup of hot chocolate and a great TV show to binge watch.
- Spend time with nature
Go outside! Take in the world around you, breath in some fresh air, or even go for a hike. Just spending time outside can drastically improve your mood, and can help you to be less stressed in your daily life.
- Surround yourself with things you love
This is another one of the most important elements to practice when trying to live a life based on the hygge concept. It is essential to surround yourself with the things that make you happy, and the things that you love. By creating a space where you are surrounded by positive things you are more likely to live a more positive, intentional, slow, and joyful life.
- Baked goods
Who doesn’t love baked goods I mean really? I know I do. Something as simple as a nice warm scone, and taking the time to enjoy it will put you in the right mindset to start living your best hygge style life.
I am a huge music junkie so this one is a big part of practicing a hygge lifestyle. Throwing in my favorite CD or a vinyl on my record player and just taking time to really enjoy the music can be so cathartic and de-stressing.
- Good book or movie
Along the same lines as music, enjoying a good book, movie, or even a television show can be a great way to slow down and take a few moments to be truly present and to enjoy something that you love. Take that cozy sweater, fluffy blanket, cup of tea, and your favorite book and hunker down on the your couch next to the fireplace, and take some time for yourself. Remembering to give back to yourself too is so important.
If you try any of these techniques or have your own suggestions on how to hygge up your home and life I would love for you to share them. Out of all of the often “fad” concepts that have come out over the past couple of years, hygge is by far probably my favorite one because it is truly about living your best life int he most mindful way possible, and I am a huge proponent of that kind of fulfilled living.
