Whew that is a somewhat loaded question! How does one start to better themselves? How do you actually start a journey of personal development? Believe me I get it! One of the biggest things I hear from people is that they don’t even know where to start because personal development or self help seems so overwhelming and intimidating. But I am here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way. Today I wanted to share with you some tips, tricks, and things to remember when it comes to starting your personal development journey.
Changing who you are, bettering yourself, overcoming your mental hurdles, and all of the things that come along with personal development can be very overwhelming and intimidating, so the number one thing that I recommend is that you start small. You can wade into the kiddie pool of personal development and self help first. You do not have to dive head first into the deep end of the pool, and just hope that you don’t drown!
start with your priorities
This may sound weird, but start with what you want to change first. Often times when people approach self help and personal development they just jump right in and are easily overcome by all the information. Start with what you want to change, educate yourself around that, and go from there.
find your people
This tip is two fold, but is super important. Firstly I mean find the people that can support you through your journey; friends, family, mentors etc. When you are on a journey to becoming a better or different person you may lose some people, but the people that stay are the true and lasting relationships. Hold onto those people. Secondly find the people who you want to learn from. The mentors, the gurus, the coaches, etc. Find the people who believe in or place value in what you do, who challenge your way of thinking, who make you question, but who you feel comfortable learning from.
don’t overwhelm yourself
I cannot stress this tip enough! There seems to be this idea that when you start a personal development or self help journey that you have to figure out everything right away, and that’s the farthest thing from the truth. Do not overwhelm yourself. You are trying to change your life, your mindset, and ultimately who you are. Go slow, be deliberate, and learn from the process.
personal development is not a destination
This may be the last tip, but it may be the most important and that is to remember that personal development is a journey not a destination. You will not wake up one day having arrived at the best version of yourself. Instead it is a process of ups and downs to figure out how to build up who you are.
Personal development and the journey to better yourself is one of the most fulfilling things you will ever do in your life, and even better because you are doing it for yourself and no one else. Just remember that it’s ok to go slow, be deliberate, and take everything in. It is a process, not an end goal!
