Whew!! I don’t know about you, but I have been feeling very overwhelmed lately, and after talking to many of my friends and clients that feeling is majorly affecting the collective at the moment. I recognize that overwhelm and burnout are very real things, and unfortunately tend to come at the worst times. Am I right? You get hit with overwhelm right when you are neck deep in a project, or on the cusp of some breakthrough, and all of a sudden all you want to do is curl up under the covers with your dog or cat and forget about the world. Because I have been feeling this way, and I have seen so many other feel this way lately I wanted to write a post today about ten things you can do to try and beat that overwhelm. Some of these you will definitely recognize because they are frequent favorites here on the site, but some are newer tidbits of goodness, so I hope they help you the next time you start to feel overwhelmed.
Nature: spend time outside, and outside of yourself because I promise you it does help to recenter yourself and remind yourself of what is important
Practice Gratitude: I know I know this one can be especially hard when you are feeling overwhelmed, but trust me when I say that practicing a little gratitude when you are feeling overwhelmed can really help you to focus on what is most important, and remind yourself of what is good and balanced in your life.
Journal: Y’all know I am a big fan of journaling, so it really isn’t a surprise that it made it onto this list, but trust me when you are feeling overwhelmed one of the best things you can do is just write out all the crazy thoughts that are swarming through your head. By getting everything out onto paper you are giving your mind a brief respite from the chaos within. You may even figure out why you are so overwhelmed, and how to fix it.
Top 3 List: This one if definitely more practical, and that is to create a top three priorities list. Create a list of the top three things you absolutely have to get done, and leave the rest for later. This technique can definitely help when you are feeling overwhelmed because your to do list is ten miles long.
Surround Yourself With Good People: This may seem strange, but trust me when you are feeling overwhelmed sometimes the best thing you can do is step away and surround yourself with people who make you feel good, people who remind you that you have got everything under control.
Self Care: This may seem obvious, but when you are struggling to beat overwhelm or prevent burnout one of the best things that you can do is to step away, and take time for yourself. Practicing simple self care can do wonders for your mind, body, and productivity.
Prioritize: Not unlike the top three list technique, when you are truly feeling overwhelmed or like you just don’t know how everything is going to get done, try prioritizing. Prioritizing your tasks into what is most important, and what really doesn’t matter as much can be truly beneficial.
Meal Prep: Now you may be thinking that meal prepping has absolutely nothing to do with feeling overwhelmed, but you would be wrong for a few reasons. When you are overwhelmed you often forget to eat, or even over eat, so planning and prepping your meals can be super helpful. Additionally because you have taken the time to plan them out ahead of time, it becomes one less thing you have to worry about.
Clean: When you are feeling overwhelmed, it can often be because your environment is overwhelming. Sometimes simply tidying up or cleaning your space can do wonders to help you feel less overwhelmed.
Meditate: Lastly I cannot recommend meditation enough for when you are feeling overwhelmed. I’m not saying that it will be easy when your mind is racing a thousand times a minute, but it will be helpful. Giving yourself a few minutes to recenter, focus, and just relax and breath with help you in the long run.
