The New Year is in full force, and you know what that means… RESOLUTIONS! Haha I feel like so many people have such a negative connotation around resolutions, but all a resolution is really is just a goal, and that’s not that scary, right? I myself will admit I am not the biggest fan of New Year’s resolutions because I tend to be of the mind that if you want to change something then you should just start, and not wait, but having said that I completely understand why people like the idea of starting fresh with a clean slate at the beginning of the year or at the beginning of a new month.
The first tip I have for setting goals and resolutions is to remember to set SMART goals. SMART is an acronym that stands for S-specific M-measurable A-attainable R-realistic T-timebound. By setting goals and resolutions that align with these features you are setting yourself up for success because you will be creating a goal that is rooted in results. Additionally creating resolutions this way helps to hold you accountable, and visualize your goal better.
The next key thing that you have to keep in mind when setting any kind of goal or resolution is to focus. Now this may seem like an obvious one, and it kind of is, but that doesn’t make it any less important. Any time you are going after anything you have to stay focused on the goal, and remember to keep going. This focus will help you hold yourself accountable, keep you on track, and help you to maintain momentum on the way to reaching your goal or resolution.
Know What’s Important
Tip number 3, of this key thing to remember may seem a little odd, but trust me it is important, and that is to know what’s important. What I mean by this is to keep in mind your priorities and focuses. Keeping in mind what is important helps you to not only stay on track, streamline the process to accomplishing the goal, but also helps you to feel less overwhelmed about the goal itself.
This may be the most important thing to remember when trying to accomplish your goals or resolutions, and that’s to know your why or your reason behind why you want to accomplish this goal. Knowing your why is crucial for success. You have to have a bigger reason behind what you are doing. For example maybe you want to save $20, but why do you want to save that money. Having a why not only holds you accountable and motivates you, but it also helps to serve as a reminder to keep going.
With the New Year in full swing it seems that everyone is setting goals or resolutions, but are they setting them the right way. The key to setting goals and resolutions that you can actually accomplish is to remember a few key things. You have to remember to set SMART goals, focus, know what’s important, and remember your why. Without these things you will struggle to accomplish your goals.
