We all have our limits, the things we say we won’t do or don’t want to try, those boundaries we have set for ourselves that we dare not push the limits of. But what happens when we start to push and test those limits, you would be surprised by some of the things that can happen when you start to test yourself. Testing your limits can lead you to discover new things about yourself, break barriers, and is often necessary to grow as a person.
Like I said going outside of your comfort zone, and testing your limits can be extremely difficult, but one the best reasons to bite the bullet and push yourself is that is allows you to discover new things about yourself. Maybe you are more introverting, and don’t really like talking to people or putting yourself in new social situations. But you really want to try an improv class so you push yourself to give it a shot, and before you know it you have discovered a completely new talent, that you wouldn’t have even given a chance had you not pushed yourself outside of those limits.
Another great reason to test your own boundaries is that it helps you to break barriers within yourself and with other people. For the sake of this blog post let’s stick with the introvert example. (I’m an introvert so I understand these all too much) Let’s say that you pluck up the courage to push yourself, and attend a party at the beginning of your first year of college. Just think simply by going to that party you are breaking down a barrier you have set in place for yourself that those aren’t the kinds of things that you do. You may even meet some new people, and that little act has become something that has brought new people into your life.
The last reason that testing your limits can actually be beneficial to your life is that it is often exactly that push that allows you to grow and transform as a person. Think about anytime that you have had to be tested or pushed outside of your comfort zone. Has it changed you? Made you a better or different person? Maybe it was that little push that you needed to grow as an individual.
I know some of the best things that have happened in my life have been so because I pushed myself outside of my boundaries or limits, and made myself a little uncomfortable. But in hindsight those moments have also helped me grow as a person in who I am today. I would love to hear if you have a story about testing your limits, and how it has affected your life.
